With the festive period approaching police officers, police community support officers and Wombwell High Street Committee have been working together in further reducing thefts from parked vehicles.
There has already been a 13% reduction in such crimes during 2010 and we are keen to further reduce such crimes during a time of year where valuable items and presents are often left on clear display.
Over the past two weeks officers have been patroling car parks and street around the Wombwell Town Centre and identifying vulnerable and in-secure vehicles as well as those who have taken measures to secure their belongings and vehicle.
During the two weeks officers have identified and recognised over 500 vehicles as having been left secure whilst twenty eight vehicles were identified as being vulnerable and the registered keepers have been contacted and advised about vehicle security.
Some of the items left on display included: cash, sat nav cradles, gifts, handbags and other items of value. In all of these cases the vehicles had covered boot areas which would have been more suitable to place the items in to avoid an increased chance of theft.
Signs have also be placed to remind drivers that although such crime is down, we should not become complacent.
