Wombwell TARA has been successful in getting funding from the South Yorkshire Police Authority ABC Awards, for a scheme for the young people of Wombwell, which rewards their good behaviour, and helps builds their self esteem.
The scheme is called, “Reach for the Top”. It is led by the SNT and supported by Berneslai Homes, and local schools, who all put forward the names of the young people, and also accompany them on the activity.
The young people who take part must earn their place through good behaviour, a significant improvement in their behaviour, or may just need a boost in their self confidence.
Over all 60 young people will be able to join in the activity, which takes place at Rotherham Climbing Wall. They work in a small group supported by an officer from the SNT or Bernslai Homes.
PCSO Malc Burke said “This is an ideal way for these young people to get to know their community officers in a relaxed environment. It encourages them to work as part of a team and builds friendship and trust. This is our third trip to date and every one who has taken part has benefited. It’s great to see how they take their responsibilities seriously, motivate and encourage each other, and the massive amount of achievement they feel at the end of the day. Not every one reaches the top, but that’s not important, it’s knowing they have done their best, and sharing in the achievements of their team mates”
