South West SNT Bi-Weekly update by Sergeant Tim cross 7/5/10
The South West Safer Neighbourhood Team is now fully staffed with four Police Officers
PCs WADSWORTH, CADMAN, CURL & WARWICK and three PCSO’s who are in possession of a dedicated vehicle for the area.
All officers work the same shift pattern and have been able to patrol as a team for the last 3 Thursday and Friday evenings.
On Wed 21st April Sgt Cross and PCs CURL & CADMAN attended the SW PACT meeting at Ecclesall Library along with 3 x PCSOs, Katie TERRINGTON (Sheffield Futures) and Caroline JENNINGs (Safer Neighbourhood Officer). There was a good turnout of members of the public, particularly from Totley. 3 x Councillors attended. In addition to the councillors Mr PERRYMAN – Chair of the Police Authority attended. The new shift pattern enable’s us to turn out in such numbers. The Wed 21st meeting resulted in several favourable comments from those attending. There was a consensus that people have noticed a recent marked increase in Police visibility, particularly at Totley.
Four four Officers were out on mountain bikes during the evening of Fri 23rd. Again this resulted in numerous favourable comments from members of the public (and one or two not so favourable ones from local kids!). Also on Friday evening Officers teamed up for half an hour with Sheffield Futures Staff who were in Totley handing out flyers for the soon to be opened youth club at King Ecgberts.
Officers have been paying regular (several times a week) visits to Councillor HILL, Mr BUNTING and Mrs CRITCHLEY and have also made less frequent (but regular) visits to members of the public who regularly attend the PACT meetings.
Tesco Express, the CO-OP and local pubs (particularly the Shepley Spitfire at Totley and the Devonshire Arms at Dore as well as Abbeydale Sports club) have been visited on numerous occasions.
Officers have stopped, spoken with and searched numerous young people. Many of their parents have been sent or had delivered ‘advice’ letters regarding their child’s behaviour, and possible Police action should they continue to come our attention.
The team have also carried out an operation with Road PolicingGroup officers, Taxi Licensing and VOSA staff. This Operation took place principally on Abbeydale Rd, Eccleshall Rd and surrounding areas. Over 30 vehicles were stopped and searched / examined in the space of 3 hours. Other Operations and search warrants are in the pipeline.
As a result of info (some of it conflicting) received from members of the public Officers are making enquiries with senior managers of the Co-Op & Tesco to try to reduce the availability of intoxicants to young people.
The next PACT meeting for the Sharrowvale, Ecclesall, Dore and Totley Area will be on the 19th May 2010 at the Ecclesall Library 6.45pm to 8pm.
