Over the past 2 months the Safer Neighbourhood Team have worked with Council partners and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to tackle both those involved in fire related incidents and remove the source often used to start fires; i.e rubbish and fly tipping hot spots.  As a result of this the numbers of 'secondary' fires over the last 2 months has significantly reduced.  two children at bentley High Primary schools have been enroled as junior fire wardens following their involvement with fire incidents and one received a reprimand.

It was agreed at the PACT meeting on 31/08/10 to remove this priority.  but it forms part of the key work of the nighbourhood team and SYF&R so although not one of the 3 priorities, it will continue to be addressed by the SNT as a whole.

These are designed to engage with the youth on the streets in known "hotspot" areas. These are a positive and provide information to both the partners and youths concerned. During these times the engagement was positive and enjoyed by the youths themselves. Often being signposted to other opportunities that they were not aware of.

Officers detained three persons (all under the influence of drink) at just after 0100 hours at Church Street, Bentley on suspicion of criminal damage and attempt theft of motor vehicle.  The individuals had damaged a local residents property at Askern Road, Bentley and after leaving the location committed further criminal offences on Church Road, where they decided to smash the window of an unattended vehicle and make efforts to steal it.  A description of the individuals was passed and one arrested after a short foot chase.  The other 2 individuals were arrested with the help of the Force helicopter and effective area searches of the location by officers on foot.  All three will be interviewed with regard to the events of the evening.

Weekend of 20th/21st May 2011

4 male adults and one female youth had alcohol seized from them in the Bentley DPPO area and advice given about street drinking.

March 2011

The Community Payback scheme may be of relevance to reducing the impact of criminal damage on the Community, so if there are areas that need cleaning up due to persistent damage (obvious public reparations) please feed suggestions in to the SNT. (community.payback@southyorkshire.probation.gsi.gov.uk) Suggestions so far have been - a number of pinfolds within Bentley, particularly Finkle Street and a project to clear up part of the Community Woodlands in Bentley.

February 2011

During February additional patrols have been put in place to address criminal damage and public disorder linked to alcohol consumption.  This saw a number of arrests for drunk and disorderly and damage; including 2 youths who removed the plough sign from the Plough Public House in Arksey and caused disruption to the highway in the locality and a further individual who caused damage to a number of cars within Bentley – all whilst under the influence of intoxicants.

A number of test purchases have taken place at both on and off license premises over the past week.  All the public houses passed and only one off licence failed.  A knife test purchase has also been conducted and all premises passed, which is a great improvement on last years test purchase which saw a large number fail.  During the alcohol test purchases an individual was also dealt with for possession of cannabis by way of a ‘warning’.

Work is currently taking place with regard to a St Leger tenant causing problems for local residents at Pickering Road.  The alleged perpetrator was arrested for an offence of criminal damage by SYP to assist partnership efforts to deter further disruptive behaviour and SNT staff will be conducting house to house enquiries to address any community concerns.

January 2011

In order to reduce/deter and educate children with regard to bullying (and cyber bullying) officers have also worked with Bentley High Street primary school to deliver assemblies and after school input with parents.  These sessions have also been used to promote safe and more responsible use of the internet by all concerned.

From 1st December to 17th January 2011 there were 14 incidents of criminal damage reported within Bentley, 4 in Toll Bar, 4 in Scawthorpe and 1 in Arksey.  There may be additional data relating to damage but it is possible this may be recorded under different criminal recording categories.

The Community Payback scheme may be of relevance to reducing the impact of criminal damage on the Community, so if there are areas that need cleaning up due to persistent damage (obvious public reparations) please feed suggestions in to myself or Jayne or through local councillors. The operation involved officers working both covertly and in full police uniform and Council staff assisted in leaflet drops and high visibility patrols within the area.

30th April 2010  - two males at two different locations in Bentley Park were issued with £80 fines by Bentley PCSO's from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team for supplying alcohol to under age youths. A male at one of the locations was also issued with a £75 fine for littering the park with his beer cans by staff from DMBC who are also part of the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Bentley Safer Neighbourhood Team is taking a very serious approach to Anti-Social Behaviour in and around the Bentley area. Local residents who attended the latest PACT and "Have Your Say" events voiced their concerns to the SNT officers present one of them being Ant-Social Behaviour which as you can see is being delt with robustly

April 09 2010 - A joint visit to the Kirkby Avenue Primary School and nearby footpath identified a congregation spot for youth drinking and anti social behaviour.  A large quantity of litter has been removed from this area and the 'hot spot' incorporated into SNT patrols.

On the same date officers conducted an operation to disperse youths from the Bentley area and issue formal warnings prohibiting their return to the locality within a 48 hour period.  Although no such warnings were appropriate on this occassion the operation will be repeated each month in order to drive our performance within this PACT priority area.

February - March 2010 - regular patrols conducted in vacinity of Bentley Food & Wine, Bentley Road and the Kirkby Avenue Youth Centre to tackle youth nuisance and street drinking.  Four ABC referrals have been submitted for youths spoken to in this area.

Discussions ongoing with local off license premises to participate in an 'alcohol watch' scheme and sign up to a code of practice for alcohol sales.  Update to be provided at May's PACT meeting.

Criminal Damage to vehicles in Bentley

We asked:

what issues concerned you most in your area

You said:

At the PACT meeting on 23/02/10 you raised concerns relating to incidents of damage to vehicles within the Bentley area

Date of priority:
23 Feb 2010
Approximate times of offence:

The majority of the reports relating to damage have been reported upon discovery by the victim in the morning.  Key times of incidents are between 17.00 hours and 06.30 hours.  Recent statistics have highlighted an increase in the reporting of incidents over the weekend periods and peak times during this period are in line with the night time economy.

We did:

Increased patrols within the highlighted areas and progressed investigations to detect offences of criminal damage.

At the PACT on 27/04/10 it was agreed that this priority could be removed.  Although criminal damage is still occurring within Bentley, the residents believe that this priority can be tackled within the separate priority relating to ASB.

Therefore as of 27/04/10 this priority has been removed.

We did:

During December 2009 and January 2010 a number of licensing visits (63 in total) were conducted by the team and a number of truancy patrols completed.

We continue to work with the local primary schools and Don Valley School to educate youngsters in relation to anti social behaviour and the dangers of alcohol consumption.  Efforts are also under way to introduce a watch scheme (similar to pub watch) for local Off licenses in the area which will enable the SNT to implement and enforce their alcohol fuelled ASB strategy.  further updates in relation to this will follow in due course.

There have been relatively few calls to SYP relating to youth nuisance within this area over the past few weeks.  However, it is clear that youngsters continue to drink on the streets of Bentley and we have recently referred a number of youths to Children’s Services/YOS under the ABC scheme and seized alcohol from them at Centurian Park.

It was agreed at the PACT on 23/02/10 to widen the scope of this priority to reflect the wider Community problems.  In view of this a new priority has been created

One of the bikes was subsequently abandonned and a local resident detained a short distance away. This male was arrested on susp of theft of the cable and offences connected with the use and possession of the quad bike.  The bike has been recovered and enquiries are ongoing.
